Heart Auction

Have you ever been to an auction
Where they only bid on hearts
They're all bought marked "as is"
It's explained before the bidding starts

One by one hearts are brought forward
Some bold some cringing in fear
Some resembling fine works of art
And some love had never been near

Each heart carries a life's secrets
Some carry more than just one
Many hearts were paraded before me
Before the auctioneer's job was done

I didn't want a perfect heart
Nor one awash with burdens galore
I wanted an average heart like mine
So mine wouldn't be lonely anymore

Some hearts beat so happily
As if they've had a rich life
Such wealth had befallen on them
They'd had only brushes with strife

A few hearts beat very quietly
As if they were indeed shy
There were some that gave the feeling
They didn't know truth from lie

Many had such raggedly edges
Some looked as smooth as glass
A few held a feeling of promise
An even dozen had no class

I watched as all the hearts
Were being sold one by one
Until the auctioneer finally said
"That's all folks! This auction is done."

But I still hadn't the heart
That I so wanted to find
I felt keen desperation
Felt half out of my mind

The auctioneer saw my distress
And pondered a moment or two
He'd saved a small heart for himself
But now felt torn on what to do

As he indeed had many hearts
Sitting upon his auctioneer's shelf
This one really wasn't so special
He argued deep within himself

While, money back in my pocket
I was just heading out the door
"Hey Miss, if you still want a heart,
I have just found one more!"

I vowed I would take it
No matter what it's background
My heart was breaking in pieces
With no other heart around

The heart was completely compatable
Because it was cracked I got it free
Now my heart sings and rejoices
Fate smiled on two hearts...and me
