Broken Fish Tale
Just after sunset,
hobbling into the sea,
under the cover of darkness,
no one spies me.
Silently wading out
until I'm waist deep,
impatiently waiting for
the next wave to leap.
Down through the foam
and the bubbles I now go,
to a wonderland I wish
you could all know.
So many brilliant colors,
rainbows under the sea,
and here I'm not a queen,
I'm just little ol' me.
Playing amongst the waves
under the star studded skies,
enchanted by all that
meets my seeking eyes.
I've swam further then
I have ever done before,
and I've spied something
I simply can't ignore.
In a place of lily pads
under the moonbeams,
I see something there;
a small village it seems.
Looking closer, I see a
family of little people there.
They look so happy,
like they haven't a care.
Smiling and laughing,
they go about their night.
Not wanting to scare them,
I stay out of sight.
Their voices are musical,
very pleasent to hear.
I've never heard sounds
so pleasing to the ear.
On their backs I thought
I saw some silvery things.
It took me a moment to
realize it was glistening wings.
I indeed found a place
magical and so grand.
Now I know how they can
live so very far from land.
Thinking of the land,
I start to swim away.
I must return to shore
before night turns day.
Not having much time,
I must swim very fast.
Come daylight my tail's two legs,
one in a bright orange cast.
Catching the next wave,
I surfed to the shoreline,
just barely beating the
hands of father time.
Back into my wheelchair,
and into the house,
ever so quiet as to not
wake my sleeping spouse.
Reaching my couch I lie
down and close my eyes,
just moments before birds
flew against the sunrise.
My dreams were of this
secret and magical place.
I'm sure I slept with
a smile on my face.
